Regardless of the many challenges of being a parent, it is still one of the most rewarding responsibilities an adult can have. Parenthood means many things for people, but perhaps one of the greatest commonalities is the desire to keep their children safe from harm. Consequently, parents go to great lengths to teach children how to be safe. Some of the most crucial lessons to be taught are in regards to personal security.
Home Security Tips for Children
Being a crime victim does not have an age requirement. And with more parents working long days, many more children and teens are coming home to empty homes after school. Of course, in cities where the crime rates are higher like those in Chicago or San Antonio home security systems are a must. However, just because a family has a home security system does not mean that teaching children how to be safe is not necessary.
Children need to be taught basic safety tips, so that their risks of becoming a victim are as low as possible. One of the most important things for parents to do is to talk about how to be safe, so children do not feel unprepared in the case of an emergency. Talking about the following home safety tips and making sure the child understands them can make the difference between becoming a victim or not.
- Never leave the house or yard without getting permission.
- When home alone, never answer the phone or door unless it is a family member or close family friend.
- Never tell anyone that they are home alone.
- Do not use any appliance unless an adult is home.
- Activate the home security system as soon upon entering.
- Do not use the internet without permission. (Parents need to be sure that the computer has security measures installed.)
- Never give out personal information or pictures to anyone via the internet.
- Tell a parent or trusted adult if anyone contacts/interacts with them in an uncomfortable manner.
Safety at School
Children spend a large part of their life at school; but this does not necessarily equal safety. Be sure to teach children that school rules are for their protection, not punishment. In addition, children should know that it is okay to tell a teacher if anyone makes them feel uncomfortable in any way. This may seem to be common sense, but for many children the fear of peer pressure is greater than self-preservation.
Depending on where one lives, children may walk home from school. Though this has been a common sight for years, in today’s world it is necessary to teach children some basic precautions. These basic safety precautions are that they should always stay with a group or a trusted adult and to always pay close attention when crossing the street.
Taking care of children is important. Parents need to make sure that their children know basic safety rules and follow them. Taking the time to protect the home and family is never wasted time. From home security systems to internet safety there is much to be aware of, but is definitely worth it.
