Most people are aware of Atlanta and its many sights and sounds; of Savannah’s historic locations and charm; and the sweet onions of Vidalia. But, when it comes to the northwestern part of the state knowledge is a bit sketchy.
However, just because it is not an area that one hears about in the news, doesn’t take away from its beauty and the many area attractions sure to please any age group. From rolling hills and vast valleys to quaint towns and delightful cities, guests will want to take some time getting to know its people and places. When planning a trip to this Georgia region, be sure at least some of these locations are included on trip planner.
Historic Georgia Locations
Take a walk back in time while learning about some of Georgia's earliest people and biggest battles. From Indian skirmishes to Confederate battle sites, northwest Georgia has had its share of action.
- New Echota: Cherokee Capital Historic Site- This is where the Trail of Tears began. It was the “county” seat of the Cherokee nation and where the Cherokee published their bilingual newspaper.
- Etowah Indian Mounds Historic Site: Come see the 6 earthen mounds, the plaza and village which are located on this 50+ acre area. It was the home of thousands of Native American Indians from 1,000-1,500 A.D.
- Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park: Brush up on Civil War history at America’s oldest national military park. Visitors will see monuments commemorating Civil War battles and heroes, can go on a driving tour, and see a video which tells more about the area’s significance.
Outdoor Adventures: Rock City Gardens, Aska Trails and More
If history is not enough to tantalize, then tempt the tastebuds then get in some exercise at these famed places. From amazing gardens to quiet trails, there is much to do.
- Rock City Gardens: As one drives through this part of Georgia, expect to see a variety of unique advertisement venues encouraging tourist to “See Rock City”. Well, don’t just pass them by! Take a day to explore the caves, flower gardens, rock formations and other interesting spots here in this unique attraction.
- Cloudland Canyon State Park: Hiking trails, waterfalls and overlooks combined with a disc golf course, camping area, tennis courts and cottages make this a great place to spend a day or two.
- Aska Trails: If looking for the opportunity to go hiking and exploring, then don’t miss a chance to hike or bike the 17 miles of trails found here! There are an assortment of trails ranging from 1 mile to 5 ½ miles as well as a surplus of rock climbing opportunities, with some climbs reaching as much as 3,200 feet.
- Mercier Orchards: As the southeast’s largest public apple orchard—not to mention the peaches, blueberries, blackberries and cider—this is just the place to taste the best of the South! Whether it’s just enough for a snack or a basketful of fruit to take along on the trip, visitors are sure to be delighted with their sweet selections.
